2017 in Review
As our enquiry volume grows year on year, we want to make sure the suitability of our enquiries continues to improve for each and every brief. This way, each and every enquiry we send to our venues will be relevant.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are often referenced in the context of technology advancements. To put simply, ML is a sub-discipline of AI; it's the area of AI which is showing most promise at solving real world problems with data networks designed to make decisions like we would. Our Data Analyst, Julie, compiled the initial dataset (250,000+ previous venue suggestions from Venue Experts) whilst our Software Engineer, Tom, wrote algorithms for trial purposes. They named this first iteration Artichoke. We've put Artichoke to work on some event briefs and evaluated its venue recommendation accuracy. From this exercise, Julie and Tom came up with the second iteration, Bamboo.
Bamboo will be rolled out internally on January 2, 2018 so that the machine can start learning! This means that Bamboo will be put to work on venue-finding briefs under human supervision. During this stage, the main objective is to improve Bamboo's accuracy. It will give our Venue Experts venue recommendations for each brief, then it will learn from the venue options our Venue Experts choose. It also uses natural language processing to learn to understand subjective words like "unusual" and the context they are used in.
We believe that the more briefs Bamboo processes, the more accurate it will become - meaning more time saved every day for you, our venue community.
